In 2017, the Long Beach Comprehensive HIV Planning Group (HPG), through a unique collaborative effort, provided city leadership with a strategy to reduce new HIV and STI diagnoses in Long Beach. With continued collaboration, the support of the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services, and guidance from HIV and STI service providers and consumers, the 2019–2022 HIV/STD Strategy was developed. This plan outlined initial goals and objectives to guide coordinated efforts aimed at making meaningful improvements in HIV, STI outcomes, and the wellbeing of communities most affected.
The strategy was created by members of the HPG, support from Next-Level Consulting, and participants of the HPG’s strategic planning task force, who incorporated the latest available data, lessons learned from years of field experience, and their lived expertise to establish goals relevant to both current needs and future priorities. To ensure the plan reflected community voices, the task force also convened a series of listening sessions across the city to gather input from populations disproportionately impacted by HIV and STIs.
By 2030, the HPG has established three main goals that align with four key pillars:
Reduce the number of new HIV and STI Infections
Reduce the number of HIV and STI related disparities
Improve the health outcomes and quality of life for people living with HIV and at risk for HIV and STIs
